How many overweight children are there in the US?

What is the difference between being overweight and being obese?

Overweight and obesity are terms that mean a person's weight is greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height.

For adults, weight and height are used to calculate a number called the “body mass index” (BMI).

  1. An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
  2. An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

What can cause overweight and obesity?

There are mainly 3 factors that can contribute to you being overweight or obese. These are:-

  1. Bad eating habit and the urge to binge (input) can make you gain weight
  2. Lack of exercises (output) can also make you overweight because exercises burn calories.
  3. Genetics - your genes can affect the way fats and calories are burned in your body. Some people have a naturally high metabolism and few fat cells, others have the opposite.

What are the health hazards related to overweight and obesity?

When you're overweight, you are likely to develop :-

  1. Hypertension
  2. Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  3. Type 2 diabetes
  4. Coronary heart disease
  5. Stroke
  6. Gallbladder disease
  7. Osteoarthritis
  8. Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  9. Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

How can an overweight or obese person lose weight?

If you're attempting to lose a large amount of weight, it is recommended that you consult with a personal physician or health care professional before beginning a weight-loss program.

Generally though, here are some suggestions to lose that excess weight :-

  1. Go slow in losing weight, do not rush. You can aim to lose 1 to 1.5 kg per week but not anymore.
  2. Be active as physical activities will help burn more calories. Some suggestions : take the stairs instead of the lift, walk around the house often, play games, do housework, etc
  3. Eat well. Select sensible portion sizes and follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

And also take a look at this clinically proven weight loss system that can really help you shed those extra kilos.
